Why Do I Offer a Free Consult?
This is about doing therapy that works.
If I get a chance to hear what you’re looking for, I can better determine if I’m a good fit for you or if you’d be better off with a referral. You get a chance to think about the possibilities therapy can offer you and commit to creating real change.
This initial free consult is therapeutic itself.
Also, I want you to feel comfortable with your decision. Throughout the years I’ve had countless opportunities to get to know various therapists – therapists in a group practice, therapists who were in consultation groups with me, and therapists that I’ve met through professional or personal connections.
Most of those therapists are wonderful and competent people. But not all of them. There are a few therapists I’ve met that I would never feel comfortable making a referral to (and a few more I’ve heard about). And I figure, since I feel that way, doesn’t it make sense that a client might also feel apprehensive about booking and then paying for an appointment with someone who they don’t like from the get-go, or even worse, someone who ends up, well, being a creep?
Since I’m really interested in clients who are committed to making changes and getting help, it only makes sense to offer them a real actual choice when they meet with me: a choice that doesn’t have pressure attached.
I don’t want a client to feel obligated to stick with me simply because they already paid for the intake session. I want a client who is committed to therapy. Therapy is expensive, and you don’t want to waste your time or money.
So, I want to take that issue off the table. That’s why I offer a free consult. You get a chance to meet with me before you decide whether you want to commit and get started.
I want you to freely choose to come back. And I like getting people excited about their possibilities! I don’t see this consult as a necessary business “expense.” I see it as a fun and invigorating opportunity for both of us.
