DBT Skills Group

I have led DBT skills groups since 1996. It’s one of my very favorite things to do.

I. Love. DBT Skills Groups. !!!

Here’s why:

There’s almost nothing more fun for me than watching people “get it.” Watching people get excited about using DBT skills to create change in their life is just so awesome. Even better is hearing about the work they did at the following week’s group session.

We embrace all the work. Failure and success are both valuable and encouraged. You learn so much from botching it up!

I love seeing a group of people develop that sense of cohesion and togetherness that helps them feel so much more supported and cared for. I love hearing them start to spontaneously help each other learn.

I love hearing individuals, who were initially frightened about sharing, decide to get vulnerable in terms of asking for clarification in what any particular DBT skill means or asking for help in how to apply skills to a personal situation.

People benefit. People change. This happens in every single group, and it is truly an honor for me to stand as a witness to growth, change and possibility.

Here are the FAQs about DBT Skills Groups:

Do you have an active DBT skills group right now?

I hold a group when I have enough people who are interested and committed to attending. It’s no fun to have a group of only three people. I encourage you to email or text me your contact info and interest in DBT group, so I can put you on the waiting list for when I start the next group.

I just completed a DBT group. Right now, the plan is to start another DBT Skills group in January 2019.

When do you have group?

Thursdays at either 11:30 or at noon (depending on what the group prefers).

Where is the group held?

Group meets in a conference room at 6 Way Road, Middlefield, CT 06455

How do I get into the group?

Easy. Text me, call me, email me. Put your name on the list. As long as you have an individual DBT therapist and you are committed to attending all 20 weeks, you are IN the group.

How much does it cost?

Group therapy fees are $55 per group. Generally, people pay for one month at a time ($220). If you pay for all 20 weeks of group at once, I give a discount of 15% (that’s $165 off the total $1100 for the entire 20-week group).

Can I be in the DBT Group without having a DBT individual therapist?

The DBT model requires an individual therapist. DBT Skills group is more like a class than it is like therapy. Individual therapy is the center, or crux, of DBT therapy.

Individual therapy is where you learn to apply the skills you are learning to your own life and challenges. While we do some work in group that will help you apply skills to specific things in your life, it is not enough to help you without an individual therapist. Your individual therapist is the one who is responsible for your overall treatment, not your DBT group leader.

Can you be my individual therapist?

We can certainly discuss that. Please contact me.

Do I have to have a certain diagnosis to be in the group?

Absolutely not. In my opinion, everyone in the world would benefit A LOT from learning and using DBT Skills in their everyday life. Everyone.
